 Background

NEA was spun off from T. Rowe Price in 1978. The fund typically invests in early-stage venture in information technology and healthcare. Most recently the firm has expanded into the growth-equity stage and energy sector. The firm has approximately $8.5 billion in committed capital and funded over 550 companies.

- Justin Klein, JD, (Managing Director): Mr. Klein joined NEA's healthcare team in 2006 and focuses on medical device, specialty pharma and biopharmaceutical company investments. Previously, Mr. Klein worked for the Duke University Health System, reporting directly to the hospital CEO on health system strategy, finance and clinical service unit operations. In addition, he has worked at Latham & Watkins LLP in Menlo Park, where he assisted life sciences companies on numerous licensing transactions, regulatory and corporate securities matters. Mr. Klein recently completed a term on the Board of Trustees of Duke University, and has previously served on the medical center's Institutional Review Board. Mr. Klein concurrently earned his MD from the Duke University School of Medicine and his JD from Harvard Law School. He received his AB in Economics and his BS in Biological Anthropology and Anatomy from Duke University.

- Tom Grossi (Principal): Mr. Grossi joined NEA in 2005 and focuses on investments in business services, enterprise software and services, mobility and alternative energy companies. Prior to NEA, Mr. Grossi was with the Boston Consulting Group where he worked in the firm's retail and energy practices. Before BCG, Mr. Grossi worked as a network engineer at America Online where he developed monitoring software used to manage AOL's extensive and rapidly changing network. Mr. Grossi received AB and SM degrees in Computer Science from Harvard University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School where he was a Baker Scholar.

- Patrick Kerins (General Partner): Mr. Kerins joined NEA in 2006 as General Partner focusing on a broad range of information technology investments with particular emphasis on enterprise software, software-as-a-service, and internet companies. Prior to joining NEA, he was General Partner of Grotech Capital Group where he specialized in high-tech investments and served on a number of boards. Prior to Grotech, Mr. Kerins spent nearly 10 years at Alex. Brown & Sons as an investment banker for high technology companies. Mr. Kerins was a consultant with McKinsey & Co. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy where he spent substantially all his tenure on the staff of Admiral H.G. Rickover at the Headquarters of the Navy's Nuclear Propulsion Program. He received a MBA, with Distinction, from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Science degree from Villanova University.

- Jon Sakoda (Partner): Mr. Sakoda joined NEA in 2006 and focuses on technology and renewable energy investments, as well as the firm's investing activities in Latin America. Prior to joining NEA, Mr. Sakoda was co-founder of IMlogic, Inc. (acquired by Symantec Corporation) and served as its Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Products. Mr. Sakoda also worked at Goldman, Sachs & Co. where he focused on venture capital investments for their Private Equity Group. Mr. Sakoda earned his A.B. degree at Harvard University in Chemistry.
